The Westcott Vineyards Logo - a symbol of timeless Art-Deco style and grace.

The Westcott Vineyards Logo is based on the bow ornament of a 1930 Dodge runabout.  This boat pictured below was hull Number 11, restored over a period of three years from 2003 to 2006 by Grant and Carolyn. The boat really does represent a beautiful example of “Art-Deco” style and grace combined with outstanding performance and comfort.

By way of background , The Horace E. Dodge Boat and Plane Corporation unveiled the 25-foot Triple Cockpit Runabout in 1929 , a vessel that seamlessly blended luxury, performance, and artistic craftsmanship. Designed by famed navel architect George Crouch, this runabout was distinguished not only by its powerful Lycoming straight-eight engine but also by its exquisite solid nickel fittings and a distinctive mermaid bow ornament.

Design and Features of the 25-Foot Triple Cockpit Runabout

The 25-foot Triple Cockpit Runabout was a testament to superior craftsmanship and attention to detail. Constructed with solid mahogany, the boat exuded both durability and timeless elegance. Its layout featured three spacious cockpits, comfortably accommodating up to eight passengers. Each cockpit was adorned with plush upholstery and equipped with folding windshields, ensuring passenger comfort and protection from the elements.

A hallmark of this Art-Deco runabout was its solid nickel fittings, which added a touch of sophistication and enhanced the vessel's aesthetic appeal. These high-quality fittings not only provided functional benefits but also contributed to the boat's luxurious ambiance.

At the bow, the runabout showcased a unique mermaid ornament, crafted from nickel-steel. This artistic piece, reminiscent of the era's automotive hood ornaments, was created by the renowned sculptor Russell G. Crook. The mermaid figurehead served as a striking visual element, embodying the spirit of adventure and elegance that the Dodge runabout represented. This is the basis of the Westcott Vineyards LOGO. The Art-Deco styling is also prominent in the label design of most of the Westcott Wines.

The Lycoming Straight-Eight Engine

Central to the runabout's impressive performance was the Lycoming straight-eight engine. Lycoming, a prominent engine manufacturer of the early 20th century, was known for producing reliable and powerful engines. The straight-eight configuration, featuring eight cylinders aligned in a single row, was celebrated for its smooth operation and robust power output. In the case of the Westcott Boat,  the lycoming engine was 165 HP and was recovered from a barn in Boston where it had rested for over 50 years.

This engine was not exclusive to marine applications; it also powered some of the most prestigious automobiles of the era, including models from Cord, Duesenberg, and Auburn. Notably, the Duesenberg Model J was equipped with a modified Lycoming straight-eight engine, featuring dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, delivering an impressive 265 horsepower.

In the 25-foot Triple Cockpit Runabout, the Lycoming straight-eight engine provided reliable and potent performance, enabling the vessel to achieve speeds ranging from 32 to 38 mph. These speeds were achieved with engine only turning over at 2000 to 2400 rpm and were attained by the Westcott boat at age 85.  This combination of power and elegance made the runabout a favorite among boating enthusiasts seeking both style and speed.

Legacy and Collectibility

Today, the 25-foot Triple Cockpit Runabout remains a highly sought-after collector's item, cherished for its historical significance, exceptional craftsmanship, and timeless design. Restored models often feature the original Lycoming straight-eight engines, solid nickel fittings, and the iconic mermaid bow ornament, preserving the authentic experience of this classic vessel.
