Blanc de Blancs: 93 Points and Fresh Lemon Aromas
A bottle of 2021 Brilliant Traditional Method Blanc de Blancs
"91 Points Westcott Brilliant Traditional Method Blanc de Blancs 2021, VQA Vinemount Ridge. Memory goes back to July when Winemaker Casey Kulczyk explained how chardonnay is always picked at a minimum 19 brix to influence and extend flavours, but also to exaggerate texture. The Brilliant Blanc de Blancs ages for 30 months on lees and this 2021 comes from a vintage with many highs and lows to be expressed with many complexities, if less consistency that the non-vintage iteration of this wine. 4 stars."
"91 Points. This is one of the more youthful, fruit driven blanc de blancs from Niagara, capturing generous chardonnay apple-pear with lemon custard and vaguely nutty notes. It is light bodied with taut acidity, some textural creaminess, no perceptible sweetness. Quite lemony on the finish. The length is excellent. Really well made, if lacking some depth, complexity to be top shelf. Tasted Nov 2024. 3 stars." Review by David Lawrason

Crafted with precision and passion, the 2021 Brilliant Traditional Method Blanc de Blancs is a stunning expression of cool-climate Chardonnay.

Sourced from Butler’s Grant Vineyard, this 100% blanc de blancs is wild fermented in used oak barrels and aged 36 months on the lees, resulting in remarkable depth and complexity. Made in a brut nature style, this wine has zero dosage, allowing the purity of its vineyard origins to shine through.

Blanc de Blancs Tasting Notes

The 2021 Blanc de Blancs delights with aromas of fresh lemon, green apple, and pear, complemented by elegant toasty lees notes and a hint of saline minerality. The fine, persistent bead enhances the wine’s luxurious texture, leading to a palate that is both bright and fresh. Expect flavors of crisp apple, pear, lemon cream, and a touch of flint, all carried through to a long, lifted finish.

"When we tasted this 100% traditional method Chardonnay, Hurst was hand labelling bottles that were to be served during i4C. The official labels couldn’t be used because the strike meant that the LCBO tasting lab was also shut down and couldn’t make approvals until the strike was over.

This is the first 100% blanc de blancs from the Butler’s Grant Vineyard and it was wild fermented in used oak barrels, spending 36 months on the lees. It’s a brut nature style, which means zero dosage (less than 1.6 g/l of RS) and topped up only with its own wine. Kulczyk notes that zero dosage allows him to make a wine that’s “more representative of where it’s coming from.”

The nose shows fresh lemon, toasty/leesy notes, green apple, pear, lovely saline minerality with an elegant bead in the glass. It’s persistent on the palate with a touch of flint, salinity, apple, pear and lemon cream that’s bright and fresh through the lifted finish."
